NPR, on the Morning Edition Show on 6-19-14, had an interesting story about black box warnings for antidepressants for teens. In my fantasy world, which has a very pretty green sky this am, here is what I would hope for as a black box warning:
This medication may reduce, or eliminate your symptoms of depression. If you experience a worsening of your symptoms, which could possibly include some suicidal thinking, you should contact your healthcare professional immediately. Research about the most effective treatment for depression finds that most people obtain the best results over time if they also participate in therapy with a mental health professional. Research also supports the benefits of lifestyle changes, including getting restful sleep, loosing weight, having a nutritious diet, getting regular exercise and participating in rewarding social activities. A mental health professional may be able to help with these changes, and with other interventions that can address the cause of your depression or reduce your symptoms. All healthcare professionals involved in your care should coordinate there services in order to help you have the best outcome.
I also hope for peace in the Middle East and a break from the rainy weather this weekend.
